2023 JMK Award winning production

October 19, 2023 by Rowan Riley

The 2023 JMK Award winner, Kalungi Ssebandeke, opened his show at the Orange Tree Theatre last night, and it’s not to be missed!

“Every aspect of Meetings benefits from director Kalungi Ssebandeke’s ingenuity… Meetings earns its status as one of the best plays to see in 2023.” *****  Loretta Monaco, TheatreLondon1

“Kalungi Ssebandeke, winner of the 2023 JMK Young Director Award, gives the piece a confident, stylish staging, in which naturalistic domestic scenes are broken up with stylised, slow-motion movement and dreamlike asides. Though the first act is ploddingly paced, the production gathers momentum in the second half, as unspoken tensions boil over and Hugh’s obsession with authenticity leads him to confront a painful history of slavery and colonialism.”  **** Dave Fargnoli, The Stage

“Riotously funny and a feast for the senses, Ssebandeke’s take on Meetings is an eye-opening look into what identity means as Western culture takes over. Featuring a talented cast who capture the balance of the play’s satire and very real horror, this engaging revival remains as much of a must-watch as it did forty years ago.” **** Mica Blackwell, Broadway World

“…the cast and the chance to catch this funny, slippery play make together an undeniable gift…”  ****   Frey Kwa Hawking, WhatsOnStage.com

“This is a first-rate revival… a must see.”  Simon Jenner, Fringe Review
