JMK Birmingham – The Rep

In partnership with Birmingham Rep, we run a Directors' Group for emerging directors and theatre-makers based in the region. Participants have access to free JMK workshops, residencies and networking events, as well as the opportunity to apply for Assistant Director bursaries.

This group is run by our JMK Director Practitioner, Martin Berry. Martin also runs our group at the Royal & Derngate, Northampton, and our new group at Nottingham Playhouse - encouraging a creative and collaborative community across the Midlands.

Current Opportunities:

On the second Thursday of every month (7-9pm), our JMK bursary recipients Nyasha Gudo and Lucy Bird will be running a free workshop at Birmingham Rep for Midlands based directors.

These workshops will be a practical and theoretical look at various aspect of directing, such as preparing a text for production, working with a writer, how to give notes in rehearsals, blocking, running technical rehearsals, and a workshop with one of the Birmingham Rep's producers.

What is the devising process? How can you apply it your own practice?

Former REP Foundry Artist, Will Jackson, will be running some clowning and devising exercises based on his practice and the work he does with Quick Duck Theatre.

LYNNEBEC, an experimental movement company based in Birmingham, will be talking about their process of devising and running some exercises with the group to give insight into how they create content for shows and projects.
