JMK Birmingham – The Rep

In partnership with Birmingham Rep, we run a Directors' Group for emerging directors and theatre-makers based in the region. Participants have access to free JMK workshops, residencies and networking events, as well as the opportunity to apply for Assistant Director bursaries.

This group is run by our JMK Director Practitioner, Martin Berry. Martin also runs our group at the Royal & Derngate, Northampton, and our new group at Nottingham Playhouse - encouraging a creative and collaborative community across the Midlands.

Storytelling Poetic Texts (Textual Breakdowns & Direct Address work)

Our next free workshop at Birmingham Rep will be led by Tristan Fynn-Aiduenu, winner of the JMK Award 2019. We will be looking at various, verbose direct address texts and will be unlocking how a director can use the words as a vehicle to stir an audience's imagination.

This free workshop is open to all directors/theatre-makers based in the Midlands. To book your free place, please email Will.Bourdillon@birmingham-rep.co.uk

Additionally, on the second Thursday of every month (7-9pm), our JMK bursary recipients Nyasha Gudo and Lucy Bird will be running a free workshop at Birmingham Rep for Midlands based directors.

These workshops will be a practical and theoretical look at various aspect of directing, such as preparing a text for production, working with a writer, how to give notes in rehearsals, blocking, running technical rehearsals, and a workshop with one of the Birmingham Rep's producers.
